Gmail's Spam Protection is very strong
You can prevent your inbox from spam by using filter, for this we can Gmail's DOT addressing and Plus Addressing

Means if your account is abcxyz@gmail.com

Gmail Dot Addressing
abcxyz@gmail.com = ab.c.x.y.z@gmail.com
abcxyz@gmail.com = ABCXYZ@gmail.com
abcxyz@gmail.com = Abc.Xyz@gmail.com

Gmail Plus Addressing
abcxyz@gmail.com = abcxyz+anything@gmail.com

abcxyz@gmail.com = abcxyz@googlemail.com

All these addresses belong to the same person. You can see this if you try to sign in with your username, but adding or removing a dot from it. You'll still go to your account.

So How this help to prevent spam ?
If you are not sure whether to give your email address or not to some site.
Give them this type of different address.When you come to know they are spamming you, Create a Filter and kick them out of your inbox.

How You will come to know that they are spamming ?
When you receive mail that seems spam, Open that mail, Click on the Show detail, check out the to: field. If the email address is that, which you have provided to that site before, you caught them.
